Latest News from Roger

Recovery is slow but happening. Hoping some dynamism will kick in on my behalf soon. Head & body is, I think, going in the right direction. Getting lots of friendly help. Plan is to return to UK via Istanbul using nurse escort. Will rest and recuperate in Battle with Ian & Sally.

It is so sad that the overall plan is negated, but at the end of the day it has been a rich and informative experience.

Roger

Dear Dr. Hossein Ghasemi

As the mother of Roger’s three wonderful children, I want to thank you for your surgical expertise and excellent repair work! Thank you also for caring for Roger’s general well-being and for showing an interest in his life.

Roger is very, very loved by his children – I don’t think he realised quite how much until the accident. Good things can result from a crisis. The crisis that could have been so much worse without the wonderful medical care he received.

I, too, believe that things happen for a reason. Roger is very strong, brave and determined! I feel optimistic that he’ll make a fast and full recovery (though we hope he doesn’t push himself too hard!) and that eventually he’ll be a happier and even stronger person for all his experiences. And who knows what might have been round that corner he didn’t reach?!

From my heart I say SHOKRYA.

My kindest regards

Hilary

PS My partner Selim is a retired hospital doctor. If you ever manage to get to practice in the UK we'll put in a good word for you.

I hope Ellie won't mind my sharing this with you all. This is what she sent to her numerous friends on "Facebook". It brought tears to my eyes and I think it says so much.

Subject: MY HERO

Hi.. Just hoping you can spare five minutes of your day to read about a truly amazing man.. On the 14th of March this remarkable person took a year's sabbatical and set off on an Epic Journey raising money and awareness for two very worthwhile charities - His plan to cycle 10,500 miles from Wellington UK all the way to Wellington New Zealand.. His journey, which he dubbed the 'Wellython' would take him to the other side of the globe via Europe, the Middle East including Iran, South East Asia and Papua New Guinea. ...

On the 31st May after cycling an amazing 4000 miles this fantastic man was hit by a minibus in Iran and knocked off his bike.. He suffered serious head trauma.. After a week in hospital where he was cared for by some wonderful doctors he now resides in Iran, looked after by a lovely local family until he is fit enough to fly back to the UK with the aid of a nurse. His dreams a little shattered, his body in pain, his head in bandages... For those who didn't already know THIS HERO IS MY DAD.. I could not be more proud of him or more thankful that he's going to be okay.. I hope to see him here in New Zealand as soon as he is well enough, although he will now be flying here, not cycling as he planned!

If anybody reading this would like to know more, read his travel diary, see his photos, comment on his blog and hopefully feel motivated to spare a little for one of his charities.. It would mean a huge amount to me and my family www.wellython.blogspot.com Sorry to send a bulk email to all..I'm just so proud of my Dad! Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

Love Ellie

Dear Roger

A very happy Francesca has told me you're safely back. Welcome home to the UK.
She said you had some good flights - first to Tehran, then to Istanbul, to Heathrow and then by ambulance to Gatwick! With two doctors each taking you on a different leg of your journey.

Lovely that you have Sally and Ian to look after you - couldn't think of a better combination!

So, enjoy a good rest and take things slowly. The family's thoughts are with you. Incidentally, my parents have taken a great interest in everything and have been very concerned about you - do go and stay with them when you're well enough.

Hope you enjoy the books I've sent via Fran (Chessie) next weekend.

We're off to see Tom and Marie in Jersey tomorrow - back on Friday.

Hope to speak to you soon

All the very very best

Hilary and Selim

Roger, you may/may not remember me - I'm Chris Davis' sister and we met one time in Ripon -oooh ... 2, 3 years ago!
I have just been reading your diary of events and wanted to add a line or two ...
Firstly, i've noted the date you're due to travel back to the UK (today), so I hope all has gone to plan with getting you back to the UK safe and sound.
Secondly, i hope you can see through the bad in what's happened to you and be proud of what you could have so easily achieved. You have achieved so much more with the recovery challenge, but through this challenge, it sounds like you've made true friends for life. You are an inspiration.
All the best Roger. Love and best wishes to you and your family. Helen
